I’m not sure if this applies to anyone else, but it definitely applies to the flight I’m about to take. The flight is not even scheduled until tomorrow, but I’ll be taking off and boarding at 3:00 am EST. I’m going to Houston to Austin to meet up with some friends for dinner.
It’s a great deal to fly to Austin to meet up with a band from there. I’m not sure if the airline’s really going to schedule my flight that way, but I’ll try anyway.
Or you could do this: call the airline three days in advance, tell them you have to go to Houston to meet a friend, and tell them you are going to get a flight to Austin. They will schedule your flight. You can then check the flight board to see if you can go to their flight. Or you can make a reservation for someone else.
If you are going to do anything other than fly from Austin to Houston, the airlines may be willing to schedule you a flight back to Austin. Some airlines will do this automatically, but others may have policies on how to make this happen.
There is one airline that will not schedule you a flight to Houston. This is because Houston is the hub for all Southwest flights and Austin is not considered a regional airport. As a result, there are no flights from Austin to Houston. In addition, when you go to Houston from Austin, you have to get off a flight to a place called West Texas International Airport and then get on a flight to Austin.
Apparently this is how things work now. Back in the old days, it was either Austin or Houston, and neither one was considered “regional”. Also, since they were not considered “regional” airlines, you had to make a change of planes to fly between the two. It was an annoying rule that would cause a lot of headaches.
From an airline point of view, it was a problem because the time zone of the two cities is different and the flight times are different. It was a pain to get from Houston to Austin, and it was a pain to get from Austin to Houston when you were flying out of Houston’s airport. So for a while, you could actually have the same flight time in one city and different flights in the other.
